“I wish I had invented blue jeans,” said the late Yves Saint Laurent. We all do.
In a competitive jean market, a few rise above the rest. Like all fashion design, the art is in the details, and Joe’s Jeans knows that. It takes over 30 hours to craft one pair of Joe’s jeans—yes, you read that right! Vancouver welcomes the brand’s first standalone store in Canada, just in time for our holiday shopping. We’re fully embracing cowgirl chic with the leather-sleeved Western Shirt ($310). And faux leather has never looked as good as it does with Joe’s coated Ruched Skinny Ankle Jean ($248/pictured), in array of shades, from basic black to navy to wine.

Mixing prints and wedge sneakers are fun (for a while), but what really gets mileage in our wardrobe is denim. Herewith, three picks to transition into fall.
The R13 crossover jeans are so in-demand, a moment's hesitation can mean the difference between scoring a pair and watching them walk out the door with (and even worse, on) someone else. The unique cross-over waist, slouchy cut and worn (but not too distressed denim) make for an insanely cool staple. $395 at Misch, 2960 South Granvile, Vancouver, 604-731-1017, www.misch.ca
We love a good denim jacket, but for a more youthful and edgy look, we're all over denim vests. This one from J.Crew has the perfect worn-in wash - throw it on over maxi when cooler temps start to set in. $114 online only at J.Crew.com
This denim smock dress from ASOS appeals to the '90s revisionist in all of us. It has an ultra-forgiving shape (and price tag) and can be worn bare leg in the summer, and with tights and boots (Doc Martens, perhaps?) when the autumn chill set in. $71.33 at ASOS.

The award for most agonizing item to shop for goes to the swimsuit, but in close second comes jeans.
If you identify, you’ll be riveted by Levi’s new Curve ID line. Focused on shape rather than size, the brand studied the bodies of 60,000 women, charting the difference between hip and seat measurements, to create three styles that account for 80 per cent of the female population. There’s Slight Curve for the straight-silhouetted who find waists too tight, Bold Curve for the hourglass girl who suffers from waist gape and Demi Curve for those in between.
Sans tears and gnashing of teeth, we got fitted in-store and found a skinny and straight style (there’s also bootcut) that looked sexy and felt comfy as all get-up.
Bye bye denim-shopping blues.
$79.50-$98 at Levi’s, 1068 Robson St., Vancouver, 604-331-9960, www.levi.ca

You don't wear "mom jeans," so why should your brood?
The new kids and babies version of Gap's 1969 Premium Denim jeans are just like yours with dark washes, distressed grey denim, skinny styles and zipper ankles, all with adjustable waistbands so you don't have to worry about them flashing too much bum.
Good jeans run in the family, obviously.

If it looks like a pair of skinny jeans, but feels lithe like a legging, it’s a jegging.
All the rage with models, celebs and rock stars who want to look sleek, but stay comfy, the best jeggings retain the same detailing as jeans—pockets, rivets, zip fly and button—but possess a super human stretch. Our pick of the pairs are Mavi’s new super soft Serena (pictured, $78), which Metric’s Emily Haines is taking on tour with her, and Paige’s Verdugo ($225 at Holt Renfrew), which was recently spotted on the post-baby bod of Heidi Klum.
This is denim the Radio City Rockettes could dance in.

Fresh off the heels of her first book, former model and denim maven Paige Adams-Geller shares her jean tips with Vitamin V:
Hang dry or air dry?
Definitely hang dry. If you put your jeans into the dryer too often the heat will blow out the lycra and they won’t have any recovery.
How often do you wash your jeans?
Every three to five wears. If they have a lot of sanding or distressing I’d suggest washing less frequently though.
Low rise or high rise?
Typically, the most ideal rise for most bodies is one and half inches bellow the bellybutton.
How many pairs do you own?
One hundred and fifty pairs, at least. My friends are dying to come over to raid my closet.
Do you remember your first pair?
I was a real girlie-girl and all I wanted to wear were sundresses and pantsuits.
What about your worst pair?
A pair of red and charcoal grey thick striped skinnies with zippers at the ankle. Hideous.
A favourite pair?
My black Paige Blue Heights skinny jeans.

You’re dying for new fall denim, but the prospect of trying on stacks of styles and sizes in a cramped fitting room is about as appealing as squeezing into your high school 501s.
Poof! Just like a jean genie, out jumps the new interactive fit guide from Paige Premium Denim. Paige herself (a former fit model who worked for Seven For All Mankind, Lucky Brand, Citizens of Humanity and others) pops up on-screen and narrows down the styles that work best for your body type.
We love the new wide-legged Hillhurst in a dressy dark wash, the ultra-slimming maternity styles, and the Hidden Hills model which works like a girdle on your thighs.
Now if we just had three wishes….
