Editors' Picks: Cool Shades for Hot Sun

The future's so bright... well, you know the rest. Herewith, four styles of sunglasses we're lovin'.

    1. Gradient Shades. The big glasses trend is still very much in fashion, but they’ve gone very '70s with gradient tones, both on the lens and the frames themselves. These Tom Ford ones have a really cool knot at the side. $435 at Holt Renfrew, 737 Dunsmuir St., Vancouver, 604-681-3121, www.holtrenfrew.com

    2. The New Cat Eye. These Prada shades are a modern, angular version of a traditional cat eye frame. Available in tortoise or black. $281 from Della Optique, 2589 W. Broadway, Vancouver, 604-742-3937, www.dellaoptique.com

    3. Summer Brights. The trend this season is all about vibrant pops of colour, so why not get yourself a pair of sunglasses in a bright hue? And at this price, you can afford one in each colour. Furlux glasses, $45 from Envision Optical, 2675 W. Fourth Ave., Vancouver, 604-733-2020, www.envisionoptical.ca

    4. Oversized specs. We like to think of Marni as the ultimate quirky-girl-gone-sophisticated designer and these round, slightly cat-eye frames really fit that bill. A little bit peculiar with a lot of Jackie O pizzazz, these oversized sunnies are bound to stand out in the crowd. $469 at Bruce Eyewear, 219 Abbott St., Vancouver, 604-662-8300, www.bruceeyewear.com

And if the sun doesn’t bother to come out, we can always wear these inside like the celebrities do. —ASI & AG

    Addicted to Kate

When launching a new lipstick, most cosmetic companies would publish a flashy advertising campaign and call it a day. But Dior is no ordinary cosmetic company, so for the launch of their new Dior Addict Ultra Gloss lipstick, they made a short film starring Kate Moss looking fabulous, as usual.

The new Dior Addict Ultra Gloss is balm, gloss, and lipstick combined into one. It moisturizes, leaves a glossy finish and comes in shades like Singuliere (a sun pop pink), Paris (a shimmery pink) and Casual Beige. We love a product that gets us closer to Kate. —ASI

    Into the Trenches

We turn to Burberry when we want the nattiest of raingear.

And now the venerable British line has coverage for our faces as well.

Burberry’s new makeup line pays homage to the legacy with foundations named “Trench” and a storm-inspired range of greyed-out eyeshadows ($33).

The shimmery compacts feature the signature Burberry check, which reminds us, time to check our makeup!

    Ah yes, still perfect.

    The Future Smells Like Chanel

If Coco Chanel was right when she declared, “a woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future,” then perhaps it’s time we talked No. 5 year plans.

At Holt Renfrew’s new Chanel Olfactive Bar, trade fortune tellers for fragrance experts and sit in a tweed chair surrounded by black and white photographs of Mademoiselle. Instead of crystal balls, there are ceramic blotters so you can smell the fullness of each fragrance as the perfumer would, without the successive sprays.

The bar is also the exclusive carrier of Les Exclusifs de Chanel collection, from which we found our next scent (we’d tell you what it is, but some things in life should remain a mystery).

    He Sprays, She Sprays

We took an scent census around the office and came up with six lovely pairs of perfumes for him and her. Herewith, our staff picks.

Marianne Wisenthal, Montreal editor, English edition
Couples who spray together, stay together. When we’re not stealing spritzs of our man’s woody Grey Vetivert by Tom Ford ($100), he’s dipping into our bottle of Private Blend Italian Cypress (from $210). Both at Holt Renfrew.

    Tara Parker Tait, Publisher
Opposites attract with Parisian cult favourite Annick Goutal's Petite  Chérie (finally, she divulges her secret scent!) for her ($110 at the Bay) and the luxe Hermès Poivre Samarcande ($250 at Hermès) for him.

    Joy Pecknold, Vancouver editor
For a date night, spritz  Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb ($120 at Holt Renfrew), a bouquet of sweet, fruity florals. If the boy shows up smelling of John Varvatos’ Artisan ($70 at Sephora), this relationship may have serious potentional.

    Malwina Gudowska, Calgary editor
French girl meets American boy: YSL’s Parisienne ($65) is a match with the masculine John Varvatos Classic ($78). Both at Sephora.

    Tonya Albulet, Western Sales Manager
Lalique's Amethyst ($110), with top notes of blackcurrant and blackberry, comes in a bold purple bottle worthy of your nightstand. If your BF wears Lacoste Pour Homme Grey ($75), it's meant to be. Both at Holt Renfrew.

Elsa Vecchi, Montreal editor, French edition
A spritz for you, a dab for him. A summery scent that is fresh and classic, Vétiver by Guerlain is made for a man, but also smells lovely on a lady. $95 at Holt Renfrew.

    Golden Arches

Google “famous eyebrows” and you get Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Brooke Shields. All give good brow and with the opening of Benefit’s new Brow Bar, so can you.

On the ground floor of Holt Renfrew we took a seat in a silver chair and let Benefit’s Arch Empress of Brows, Hilary Foote, work her brow know-how. With mathematical precision, she waxed off what didn’t belong and filled in the areas where we were overzealous with the tweezers, leaving us with shapely brows that start, end and bend where they should.

    Now that’s raising an eyebrow.

    Ladies Who Launch

Business class, VIP rooms and backstage passes: sometimes the best things in life are elite.

That must explain why we're besotted with the luxe and lovely Chantecaille line from New York, whose counter opens this week at Holt Renfrew. The combination of florals, cutting-edge skin care science and a serious commitment to environmentalism is intoxicating.

A family business with the impossibly chic French matriarch Sylvie Chantecaille at the helm (she launched the trailblazing Prescriptives line for Estee Lauder), eco-conscious daughter Alex travels the world as Director of Sales and designer-darling Olivia is the Creative Director—when she isn't front row at the Philip Lim show or being photographed for Style.com.

We’re hooked on the Rice and Geranium Foaming Cleanser ($62); made with such a high concentration of top notch ingredients (rice bran, geranium, seaweed and green tea leaves), only a small dollop is needed for a thorough cleanse. .

We may never make it to the style pages of Paris Match, but at least we can save face like a socialite.

    Back to Cool

Our kid sisters needn’t walk a mile in our knock-off Doc Martens.

Thanks to “Don’t Miss the Marc,” a back-to-school capsule collection by Marc Jacobs, the younger set can have a taste of high fashion at a fraction of the cost. All eight pieces, which include jackets, jeans, skirts, scarves, leggings and tees, ring in under $200. We think the Miss Marc “Don’t Fret My Pet” t-shirt (pictured, $58) is the perfect fashion statement on the high drama of high school.

Scoring top Marcs isn’t so hard after all.

    FEET FIRST

The shoe sale at Holts is in full swing, but your little tootsies would look so much better in those half-price Loubs with a little primp and polish.

Enter the cool oasis of the new Holts Salon and Spa where there are as many pedicure choices as you have toes.

We chose the Hot Lava Mud pedicure ($75), in which minerals and organic mud were painted on our feet with an artist's paintbrush as we sipped strawberry-infused water.

After a few minutes in electric booties, a peach paraffin dip ($15), and a coat of ultra-shiny Essie polish, we were more than ready to hit the escalator and fight for those size 7s.

Pedicures are $50-$75. Holts Salon and Spa, 737 Dunsmuir St., 604-681-3121, www.holtrenfrew.com
