Hiking in Style
This editor’s sport of choice used to be poledancing, one of the few fitness activities done in heels. But two years later, add a dog and a baby, and spinning around a pole was simply not fun for the whole family.
Which is why hiking became a favourite workout. But what does one wear? Leggings are impractical, jeans are too stiff, and most fancy performance hiking wear is just too serious for a fair-weather hiker. That’s why we love Columbia’s Passo Alto Straight Leg Pants. The fabric wicks away moisture, offers 50 SPF protection, and they are really comfortable. Best part? They look like a slim cut black pant.
Happy trails to us. —Alexandra Suhner Isenberg

A Bout Last Night
Take the hard hits of hockey and the nostalgia of a spin around the Stardust roller rink and you’ve got one hot Saturday night.
It’s roller derby Whip It-style and Vancouver has its own league, the Terminal City Rollergirls. We took in the season opener and it was full of thrills, spills and fishnets on four wheels. If you’re foggy on the rules, like we were, grab a program that explains blockers, jammers and pivots, to get up to speed. And just for fun, pick your rollergirl name then double-check it against the international roster (unfortunately Punky Bruiser and Lucille Brawl are already taken).
Next bout is May 15 at Minoru Area, 7551 Minoru Gate, Richmond, www.terminalcityrollergirls.com

SURF'S UP
We admit it: The closest we’ve ever come to surfing the pipe is listening to The Beach Boys.
So when we heard about the ladies-only Roxy Surf Camp in Tofino, we decided to spend the weekend in a wetsuit.
Pro surfer and Tofino local Catherine Bruhwiler leads the class with her rock star surf stories and lessons on wave etiquette, safety and technique. While we may have mastered the lingo (surf the soup girls!), standing on the board? Not so much.
We love a good wipe out.
Weekend classes run in Tofino in July and August, $175 per person for two days of instruction (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) and equipment rental. See more at www.roxy.com or contact Bruhwiler Surf School, www.bruhwilersurf.com

BAY WATCH, TOFINO
Whether whale watching, storm watching or just providing the perfect setting for him to pop the question, Tofino’s as romantic as the proverbial long walk on the beach.

Warm up at beach-side Shelter restaurant with blazing tiki torches, a great wine list, and the most delicious little side-stripe prawn “wacos” (wonton tacos) we’ve ever sampled. Check out the surf cam: www.shelterrestaurant.comAugust 29th, 2007
HOCKEY TALKIE
Boys will be boys but when they haul their stinky hockey gear into the front hall—and leave it there all week—not even a Diptyque candle will handle the task.
Rather than fume, sign your guy up for the brand new Gear Drop, North America's first hockey equipment drying and storage service, started by (surprise, surprise) a clever hockey wife.

GYM BUNNY
All gym bunnies will want to hop on in to the brand new Steve Nash Sports Club downtown.
Posh amenities include towel service, a juice bar, massage rooms and a women's changing lounge with individual upholstered ottomans to sit on while lacing up your Asics.
Throw in a spinning studio, a yoga studio and cardio equipment with personal flat screens so you can catch up on eTalk while you blast your butt, it's an all-round first-class facility.
Now wouldn't it be great if you signed up your man, and three months later he'd turn into Steve Nash?

ultimate easter ski bunny
Don't be caught on the bunny hill in last year's stretchies when you could be shifting pow in Prada instead.
With the Four Season's Whistler's Ski Lite program you can rent a sleek black Prada ski jacket and pants ($50) along with your high-performance equipment.
The unique ski concierge has your equipment delivered right to the base of Blackcomb, where you sit on leather banquettes sipping complimentary hot chocolate as the staff puts on your boots and advises on the day's best runs.
Then when you're ready to après, they'll whisk it all away to be dried and waxed for tomorrow.
Just keep those sunnies on and they'll be sure it's Elle Macpherson under that fur-lined toque.
The Four Seasons Whistler offers the third night free when you book two nights starting April 9. Read more at www.fourseasons.com/whistler

free money, honey
Summer has officially arrived. It's time to get out and experience all the reasons why your "character" 400-square-foot apartment costs a small fortune every month.
Free money is always good, so we’re all for the Four Seasons Resort Whistler's new “Stay Three Nights, Get $300” package where your three-day stay comes with a $300 credit to use as you please in the resort (and yes that includes your trashy pool-side mags and in-room dining).
Get your mountain glow on at the spa with ultra-luxurious treatments like the Myoxy-Caviar facial or the signature Four Seasons treatment complete with a soothing soak, a peppermint and honey scrub, a glacial clay wrap and an aromatherapy massage.
Next, sit pretty at Fifty Two 80 Bistro and Bar's heated outdoor patio and satisfy your summer cravings with oysters on the half shell, seafood platters and a daily "from the spit" special.
And for comfy loungewear, visit the Four Season’s ski concierge, newly converted for the summer into a Kashwere store, home of everything soft and fuzzy for you, your home, your kids…and your dog.
