Hiking in Style
This editor’s sport of choice used to be poledancing, one of the few fitness activities done in heels. But two years later, add a dog and a baby, and spinning around a pole was simply not fun for the whole family.
Which is why hiking became a favourite workout. But what does one wear? Leggings are impractical, jeans are too stiff, and most fancy performance hiking wear is just too serious for a fair-weather hiker. That’s why we love Columbia’s Passo Alto Straight Leg Pants. The fabric wicks away moisture, offers 50 SPF protection, and they are really comfortable. Best part? They look like a slim cut black pant.
Happy trails to us. —Alexandra Suhner Isenberg

She Wears the Pants
We imagine Katharine Hepburn wore the pants in all her relationships, and what great pants they were.
Her menswear-inspired pantaloons showed up on many a fall runway, from Preen to McQueen. The silhouette we fancy the most accentuates the waist, drapes loosely over the thigh, narrows at the ankle and are cuffed, cropped or rolled at the ankle for a modern twist. Our pick of the pairs? If you’re looking to simply test-drive the style, we suggest Silence & Noise’s take on the trend ($58 at Urban Outfitters). For a more staid investment, Vanessa Bruno Athé’s navy version ($345 at Net-A-Porter) will take you far. And for the ultimate splurge, Chloe’s cream pair ($1,133 at Saks Fifth Avenue, pictured) is our dream pair.
So Kate rubbed some people the wrong way in her day; her versatile trousers work well with almost anything.
