    Chain Gang

Vancouver-based band Chains of Love is Toronto-bound, and just in time for summer.

Nathalia Pizzaro and Rebecca Marie Law Gray are the gorgeous garage-soul duo who front the ensemble. The sound cops The Cramps and Smith Westerns, with bits of Best Coast and Brilliant Colours tied in to give it a healthy dose of strogen.

Standout songs include Breaking My Heart, a psychedelic philippic about sour grapes, and You Got It, a summer-campy song that takes us back to days spent doubling on our besties' handle bars, blue Freezies dangling from our sun-chapped lips, racing down a dirt road on an afternoon that never ends. —Carli Stephens-Rothman

Catch Chains Of Love, with Crocodiles and Dirty Beaches, at The Silver Dollar on June 16, 2011, http://chainsoflove.bandcamp.com

    Yo Mamma Mamma

When a kids group plays Coachella and is the inspiration behind Brad Pitt's Halloween costume, you know it's captured the zeitgeist.

DJ Lance Rock and the Gabba Gang are taking their hip show on the road to select Canadian cities. High-energy and interactive, the magical boom box will be pumping, and the Dancey Dance section will include a top secret guest at every show (past participants include Sarah Silverman and Snoop Dog).

Just try not to push the kids out of the way when you rush the stage.

    Kid Rock

When little Saxon unearths his Dad’s old turntables (and Metallica collection) and Vivienne becomes a backstage baby, make sure they don’t become the next It’s All Gone Pete Tong by protecting their hearing with these cool muffs.

Called Peltor Hearing Protectors (let’s keep that between us), the adjustable hot pink and bright blue earphones shield little ears from harmful noises while letting in ambient sound at hockey games, concerts, and parades.

    Rock on, mom.

    Age 1 and up. $39.95 at www.dandelionkids.ca

    Turn Baby Turn

No disrespect to DJs but there’s something about live soul music that can’t be duplicated on turntables.

Maybe that’s why we love Saturday nights when Toronto's soul crew, the A-Team, plays the Orbit Room.

Singing classics from the Motown era to today, the band’s funkdafied version of Sting’s “If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free” gives the original a run for its money.

Seating is limited, but this kind of music isn’t meant to be heard sitting down. See you on the dance floor.

    $8 cover,10:30 p.m. every Saturday. Orbit Room, 580 College St., Toronto, 416-535-0613, www.orbitroom.ca

    Singing the Blues

Spring has sprung and it’s not just the mourning doves twittering a pretty tune.

B.C.-born songbird, Ndidi Onukwulu brings her bluesy sound to The Rivoli Friday night, playing songs from her acclaimed sophomore album The Contradictor.

With influences that span the musical scale from '30s ragtime jazz to gospel to reggae, it’s no wonder this unique voice has such a broad following.

Her migration to Paris is imminent so catch a glimpse before Onukwulu flies the coup.

    Ndidi Onukwulu plays The Rivoli, 334 Queen St. W., Toronto, 416-596-1908, April 24 at 8 p.m., tickets $15, www.rivoli.ca

    TRIPPY GENIUS

From the piercings to the tattoos to the loud cars, your mother never really liked the guys you dated.

So why not do mom proud and spend tonight with a PhD-wielding fellow?

Dundas, Ontario native Daniel Snaith may have a doctorate in mathematics, but this math geek has figured out an equation for indie electronic rock that is much more accessible than grade 11 calculus.

Recording under the name Caribou (formerly known as Manitoba), Snaith's latest album Andorra is a tribute to the sweet sounds of The Beach Boys with a psychedelic kick.

Expect a live show as mind altering as the LSD trip in the wilderness that first gave Snaith the inspiration for his iconic Canadian name.

What?! He's a proud Canadian. There are some things mom doesn't need to find out.

Enjoy Caribou tonight at Lee's Palace, tickets are $15.
