It's All Fun and Games: 3 Baby shower Activities

Not everyone is a fan of games at a baby shower, but we need to keep the mom-to-be entertained while we drink all her champagne.

    1. Match the celebrity and their baby. Print out lists of celebrities and their baby’s (ridiculous) names, ask the players to match each child with their parent. The one with the most correct matches wins. Do you know who Bear Blu, Moon Unit, and Princess Tiaamii’s parents are? The fun begins….

    2. Decorate onesies while mom-to-be opens gifts. Unwrapping presents can take a long time, so provide a few sets of plain onesies and let the guests personalize an outfit for the baby. Non-toxic fabric paints and printed fabrics (for appliqués) make for some very memorable onesies.

    3. Baby bingo. A great opportunity to hand out some fun little prizes, you could make your own bingo cards, or go the easy route and order these cute ones from Etsy. We love nail polishes or antique tea cups and saucers as prizes, and if many of the guests aren’t parents yet, baby making kits (sexy panties) are fun too.

    Play that Funky Music

Everybody's working for The Weeknd, that mysterious R&B outfit with the free-for-download, totally radical new mixtape.

Drake's tweeting lyrics, Pitchfork's giving it an 8.5, and even Refinery29 is declaring it “their jam.” Step off, Refinery! The Weeknd is, in fact, our jam.

Yes, the guys behind this magic are making it right here in Toronto. All the more reason to check it out, no? Start with the hot, hazy vibrations of “Loft Music,” which makes a Beach House sample sound more like Sex in the Beach House, and then just try to stop. —SNP

    On a Blogroll

No self-respecting blogger is still on wordpress. When it comes to image-only blogs especially, Tumblr is where it’s at. Here are some of our current loves.

Hopeless romantics will fall head over heels for the images and text over at Better than Fine.

With a gorgeous mix of fashion, illustration and pure whimsy, Tatielle is one of our favourite blogs out there.

Modern Hepburn is a beautifully curated blog of fashion, food and interior design. Don’t you just love this photo of Audrey?

Forget getting any work done today. Fashion lovers will swoon over the images at Love You Kath.

If you haven't already checked out Honestly...WTF, you are missing out. Accessories designer Erica Chan Coffman and stylist Lauren Kolodny recently ventured into Tumblr territory with images that are nothing short of stunning. —AT

    Icing on the cake

What girl doesn’t swoon over fanciful clothes and cakes covered in colourful icing?

I love muffins is an adorable blog filled with deliciously pretty images of both. It’s hard not to get swept away by the starry halos, glittery ponchos and printed frocks. The baked goods are equally gorgeous – especially this Marie Antoinette themed one.

We tried out these brezel muffins and they truly are yummy.

Serve wearing a tulle skirt and a smile.

    Appy Days Are Here

Inside time means quality time with your child and your iPad. Herewith, Canada’s media moms share their favourite kids’ apps.

    Baby GO! (toddler) Free
Fabulous because it reinforces the letters along with the child’s keystrokes, and the girl's voice is adorable to boot.
Katherine Holland, VitaminDaily.com contributor and blogger at www.katherineholland.ca

    Talking Carl (pre-schooler) $0.99
Fun little monster that repeats everything you say in a silly voice. Sort of like a real child!
Erika Pantages, VitaminDaily.com guest editor and blogger at www.thisishowistroll.blogspot.com

Pocket Pond and Cake Doodle (baby to adult/kindergarten) Free/$0.99
This realistic, serene koi pond lets you swish the water and make the fish change direction with a satisfying sound. Hours of zen. Got a little Cake Boss on your hands? With Cake Doodle, they can tip and shake the iPad to add ingredients, then mix, bake, ice, decorate and “eat” their cake creations.
    Sarah Bancroft, VitaminDaily.com Editor-in-chief

    Pocketphonics (pre-schooler) $1.99
I love this app because it helps children recognize letters and their sounds through repetition. It also tweaks their fine motor skills by having them trace letters. It involves three of their senses and thus reinforces learning. Just keep the volume down low because the mechanical voice makes you crazy.
    Laura Keogh, co-founder of www.sweetpotatochronicles.com

Horse's Collection and Audubon Owls (pre-schooler to elementary) $1.99/$0.99
Budding equestrians will love identifying the different breeds of horses in this addictive memory game while little naturalists will be all over Audobon Owls, which is like an interactive field guide with pictures, fun facts and video.
    Susie Wall, Vancouver reporter, eTalk.

    Total Baby (moms) $4.99
A lot of moms I know rave about Total Baby. It keeps track of everything baby related (feeds, poops, naps, doctor appointments) so you can keep your head above water when you're too exhausted to remember your name.

    Downhill Diva

With the forecast calling for snow, snow and more snow, what better way to embrace the season than by zigzagging at full pelt down one of our city’s toboggan runs?

    Withrow Park
The hill is quite steep but still suitable for easy-riding toddlers and kids.

    Riverdale Park
Thrill seekers will love this one. Look it’s not the Cresta Run, but it’s steep enough to get excited about.

    Trinity Bellwoods
If you live in the neighbourhood why not fit in a quick sled-ride on your krazy karpet before work? Sure beats a cold shower in the morning.

    High Park
With plenty of hills to choose from, High Park is a good option if your group includes both daredevils and wusses.

    Lithuania Park
Don’t miss out on this sledding star. The longest hill of the lot.

No toboggan? Try thick a garbage bag, a baking tray or a For Sale sign.

    Beauty Regime, Reboot

Simplify, simplify, simplify – that’s our mantra for 2011. Let’s begin with a basic beauty regime that focuses on bare essentials.

To help us edit our cosmetic kit to a manageable size, we’re turning to beauty blogger and Vogue insider, Emily Weiss.

Her fabulous site, http://intothegloss.com, launched in the fall, is packed with useful beauty tips and tricks, interviews and scoops from industry pros, plus product suggestions that really shine.

We enjoyed Kristina O’Neill’s (executive editor, Harper’s Bazaar) time saving tips on becoming more efficient in the bathroom while make-up artist, Lisa Houghton offers up some effortless make-up tricks from her kit.

So far, we’ve sussed the ‘swipe of mascara and concealer look,' but how to achieve a low-maintenance mane?

    The New Meaning of Pin-up

If you’re constantly clipping magazine pages of looks you love and bookmarking blogs with to-die-for decor, you may want to check out Pinterest.

Pinterest calls itself a “virtual pinboard.” In other words, it’s a place to collect pictures of the things you discover online but, in typical fashion, can’t find weeks later when you finally have time to browse the racks.

It’s a godsend for anyone brainstorming an event, design project or wardrobe refresh as you can organize pictures on themed boards you name yourself, such as “Spring Style Inspiration,” “Bouquets and Bridesmaid,” or “Recipes to Try” and so on. Oh, and no surprise, it’s connected to Twitter, so you can follow other users' pinboards for inspiration.

Our work productivity may have plummeted but we’re a lot more confident about our New Year's Eve outfit.
