    A stylish lunch

It’s time for the little ones to head back to school (secret sigh of relief). Let’s send them off in style!

We may have learned a thing or two from Halle Berry, like how to make a memorable beach entrance. But we also learned how to sport your kid’s lunch box with the same sass as your Gucci bag. That’s because said lunch box is by Beatrix NY, the cutest accessory line for kids. Featuring an array of adorable creatures like Dieter the Monkey, Esther the Bunny, Juju the Lady Bug and Alister the Dino, these little boxes will make their school lunch a stylin’ one.

Now about that Gucci bag…. —Anya Georgijevic

    Carry-on curry

We’re noshing on veggie stuffed dosas with a side of coconut chutney for lunch, how about you?

If you’re still settling for soggy sandwiches, consider the mouthwatering options at Tiffinday. A delicious vegan meal freshly prepared by company president Seema Pabari and her team and delivered to your desk in India's traditional tiffin box is what you can expect.

The menu changes daily, but recipes are always loaded with vegetables, whole grains and essential fats and oils. You simply order by 3 p.m. the night before and your meal will arrive freshly made and warm in a thermal bag at lunchtime. —AT

    Ladies Who Lunch

When you sandwich three pickles and a lonely slice of processed cheese between two slices of stale bread, you know you’ve hit packed-lunch purgatory. We’ve come up with a few simple, creative ways to make dining al desko gourmet.

    • Mix lemon, garlic, olive oil, a drop of honey and a handful of coriander (cilantro) into raw grated carrots. Scatter a spoonful of sesame seeds on top. Toss in some feta if you like. Delicious.

    • Take last night’s chicken leftovers and mix the meat into some lime, chillies, coriander (cilantro) and avocado for a hearty Mexican salad.

    • Cooked brown rice mixed with grated orange zest, chopped hazelnuts, olive oil and almost any vegetable is a tasty filler-upper.

    • If you’re really pressed for time, a tin of flageolet beans, rinsed and mixed with a splash of olive oil and some chopped parsley is a sure winner.

    The Big Cheese

Nothing tickles a cheese lover’s nostrils like the pong of a pungent Petite Muenster.

Step into the Lesliville Cheese Market and let your nose do the shopping. With a wide selection of stinky (and non-stinky) cheeses from around the globe (manchego, raclette and blue, to name a few), the new Queen West location is pure fromage heaven.

Pick up a buttery baguette, some homemade dips (hummus and edamame is delish), handcrafted Italian salumi, and presto—you’ve got the loveliest weekend lunch imaginable.

    Let's Do Lunch

Between Nancy’s Cheese, the Annex HodgePodge and Frangipane, there’s no shortage of tasty bites on Dupont Street.

But our lunchtime vote goes to Ezra’s Pound, a charming little café with checkerboard flooring, mismatched chairs and a menu that hits the spot every time.

A cheddar cheese sandwich, smothered in apple butter and dollops of onion marmalade is our pick, followed by a frothy shot of espresso and a homemade chocolate-dipped macaroon.

Of course, this place is so cozy and inviting (the music is terrific) lunch may turn into afternoon tea. Ah well, how important was that meeting anyway?

    LADIES LUNCH

After years of settling for mediocre caesars and overpriced niçoise, we have finally found two Yorkville lunch spots that whip the rest.

Brimming with character, Mela dishes out tasty Italian fare for the veggie hungry. Try the Arborio rice pie or a Quinoa salad loaded with colourful vegetables (mains $6-$9). Owner and chef, Robert Granata will toss together a mean pastaciutta if you ask. The blueberry pie (from Wanda’s Pie) ends things sweetly.

While the weather lasts make your way to the pretty back patio at Carens Wine and Cheese, where Moroccan style lanterns hang from elegant trees. Enormous slabs of warm baguettes are stuffed with grilled chicken, sweet peppers and Sao Miguel cheese. The Stilton burger or the spicy baked mac 'n' cheese fill the hungriest of humans while lighter dishes such as salads and nibbles hit the spot (mains $14-$30). Wash it down with a glass or two from the generous wine list.

Just don’t get too trolleyed—you might regret splurging on those hot pink suede Louboutins.

Mela, 7a Yorkville Ave., Toronto, 416-916-0619.

Carens Wine and Cheese, 58 Cumberland St., Toronto, 416-962-5158.
