the girl who ate new york
Our up-to-the-moment guide to the hottest culinary addresses in the Big Apple this week:
WD 50
50 Clinton St., 212-477-2900
For a once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience, try WD50, where kitchen gastronauts dream up dishes like a mango-coconut confection that looks — and behaves — exactly like a fried egg.
The Spotted Pig
314 11th St. (at Greenwich St.), 212-620-0393
For a boisterous late night in a gastro-pub, the new upstairs oyster bar will do just fine. Apparently there is food, though we saw none of it. Also spotted: the Queer Eye guys.
Bouchon Bakery
3rd Floor, Time Warner Centre, 101 Columbus Circle, 212-823-9366
Can’t get into Per Se? In the same building at the lower end of Central Park, Thomas Keller’s newest property—a bakery—offers beautiful take-away salads, sandwiches and pastries in chic white containers. Picnic in the park, anyone?
Degustation
239 E. 5th St. (at Second Ave.), 212-979-1012
A brand new 16-seat Spanish-French tasting bar from a young chef with pedigree. Located in a former robata grill adjoining a sushi restaurant (yes, you’re in the right place) the small dishes include a sublime grilled squid stuffed with braised short ribs and addictive cheese croquettes. Seven little dishes and four glasses of wine was just US$100 — amazing.
Morimoto
88 Tenth Ave., 212-989-8883
Iron Chef Morimoto has opened his massive, US$15 million nightspot where the Japanese minimalism is a counterpoint to the maximalist crowds. Despite being in the hip meatpacking district, you really should order the sushi.
