    Party for a princess

Found: The ultimate birthday party for a beautista-in-the making.

During the week, newly opened salon La Rousse offers cuts, colour and treatments to help grown-up gals be at their most gorgeous. But on Sundays, it can be all about the little ones. For $35 a head (8 minimum, reservations required), the experts will open their doors and provide hair styling, makeup, manis and a photo session for your budding fashionistas.

    Downtown Curls

Sure we're into reducing, reusing and recycling, but not when it comes to our hair.

Until recently gals who wanted to go glam and stay green didn’t have a lot of options in the downtown core. Lucky for our long locks, seasoned stylists Andrea Harrison and Damon Thomas have opened Aveda Concept Salon, Adikt. Now we can sneak out from work for a mid-day cut ($70), blow-out (from $30) or gloss treatment (from $30), complete with an Aveda scalp massage and hot cup of tea, and get back in time for our afternoon meeting without anyone suspecting a thing.

Although our shiny new do might raise a few eyebrows. —Jennifer Nachshen

I Feel Like a Natural Woman

We know Koükla (Greek for “my sweetheart”) hair salon has been open for over a year, but when we heard about owner Sia Pettas’ emphasis on natural looks and products (in fact, she refused to do permanent straightening until she found products that fit her philosophy), we had to see this sweetheart of a salon for ourselves.

She was turning a client’s hair from edgy blue-black to a more natural brown when we arrived, so we were more than happy to relax on the lovely backyard terrace, sipping ice cold lemonade. After a thorough wash and an intensive moisturizing hair mask, Sia styled our locks into a shiny, moveable do ($30). We’re considering coming back for the Smooth Infusion Retexturing System by Aveda ($150/hour). Formaldehyde-free and 74 per cent plant-based, this natural system straightens, curls and waves without damaging hair.

We’re ready to go au naturel, hair-wise of course. —Jennifer Nachshen

    COLOUR MY LOVE

When our longtime colorist went AWOL (and took our recipe card with him), we suffered through greenish-blonde streaks, screechy stylists and questionable zebra stripes.

    Then along came Hugo Mainville.

Hed Salon’s russet-haired genius has our undying loyalty for his no-nonsense approach and natural highlights. Mainville’s strength is blending tones that make skin look radiant. But if you’re looking for wild-and-crazy, don’t even bother: “I tell them to go else where. After all it’s my name on their hair.”

You may need to book him two months in advance, but trust us he’s worth it…and so are you.

Catch Hugo on TQS’s Beauté Express (Tuesdays, 7 p.m.). Hed Salon, 4267 St Laurent, 514-845-0007, www.hedsalon.com

    BLOWN AWAY

Your updo is ever so sleek leaving the salon, but somehow when you re-create the look at home, it ends up looking like a rat’s nest.

Take your hairstyling techniques from drab to fab by booking a private session with hairstylist Francis Tremblay from Têtu ($95). Along with an analysis of your blow dryer, shampoos and styling products, the hour-long lesson will teach you how to wield bobby-pins like a pro.
