    Back to Basics

After a season of sloth and over-indulgence, it may take a drill sergeant to get us off the sofa.

But we’ve discovered an easier way to burn stress and calories with Powerhouse Hit the Deck. This tiny fitness kit (US$19.99) includes a timer and 35 cards with easy-to-follow interval exercises, including strength training and cardio (no props required). The mighty ambitious can work for 30-minutes straight while the rest of us can ease into our new fitness regime at ten-minute intervals. We especially love that the kit is so small, we can throw it into our suitcase on trips outta town.

It’s like our own little bootcamp-in-a-box (without all the screaming).

    Nip Tuck

Looking to fine-tune from top to tail?

Popular with ladies-who-lunch and pro-hockey players, the newly expanded boutique-style Victoria Park offers a Total Body Transformation program, including expert advice on nutrition, personal training, and non-surgical cosmetic treatments. We love the cozy beauty salon (featuring toxin-free Luzern products), TRX classes (get a sculpted core using suspended ropes), and state-of-the-art Medispa with a secret exit for privacy. Zap brown spots with Intense Pulsed Light Therapy or book in for one-hour of body Thermage, which uses radiofrequency energy to tighten thighs and derriere.

If you don’t swoon over the striking art works, soothing grey walls and tree top views of upper Westmount, you’ll be knocked out by Dr. Mirko Gilardino, the spa’s resident McSteamy. Trust us.

    Hot Stuff

The season of sun salutations on Mount Royal is over so we’re heading indoors to Moksha Yoga NDG’s beautifully revamped Studio B.

With soft cork floors, picture windows and massive mirrors, this palace-of-zen is now radiantly heated for hot yoga classes (practiced between 38 and 41 degrees Celsius). The eco-friendly floors make your tootsies feel more welcome than hardwood, plus cork is anti-bacterial and soft on the back (perfect for corpse pose!). We also love that Moksha uses all-natural cleaning products and VOC paint so your deep breathing is toxin free.

    We’ll om to that.

    Lean and Green

We try to be conscious consumers, but being eco-friendly can be a strain on the purse strings.

Save a few bob with a week of free, no-strings attached sun salutations at Happy Tree Yoga. With its bamboo floors and energy-efficient studio, it’s a poster child for Earth Day and just one of 120 business featured in The Conscience Verte Rebate Guide (at Renaud-Bray, $20).

Holding a Plank Pose for a full minute may be hard, but being green is easy.

    Body is a Wonderland

We’ve said it a million times: If we had we had a fitness guru and personal chef on speed dial, we too would have the hot bod of Jen Aniston.

No more excuses since Studio Endorphine launched its Aniston Overhaul program. This Hollywood regime includes 10 private Pilates sessions, five group classes, a guided trip to your local grocery store and personalized menu plan from organic chef/trainer Stephanie Poulin ($850).

    Thirties, meet the new 40.

    Spring Into Health

We admit it: we’ve spent the last few months hibernating and binging on cheese danish.

With hot-pant season only days away, it’s time to get up off the couch. We’re kick-starting a new regime with the 30-day Spring Detox Challenge at Studio Breathe. This breezy fitness studio on the Lachine Canal will help us box, tone, skip, spin and yogify our jiggly bits back into shape.

In a mere month, we plan to be patio pretty,  just in time to re-tox on warm-weather cocktails.

    $115/unlimited classes until April 18. Studio Breathe, 1313 Shearer, Montreal, 514-933-3666, www.studiobreathe.com

    Queen Victoria

Escaping the city grind for a full-blown spa experience doesn’t mean gassing up the car and getting lost on a country road.

Spend a lazy afternoon at an oh-so-chic city retreat right in Westmount. With its cedar walls, white oak floors and tree-top views, Victoria Park rejuvenates your body, mind and soul.

After a grueling hour of Budokon (this blend of martial arts, power yoga and mediation is a Cox 'n’ Aniston fave), we sweat it out in the state of the art steam room, sipped freshly squeezed juice and lived like a queen.

Welll, at least for one day.

    limber up

On the last minute mad dash for prezzies? Remaining limber will keep you on top of your game.

We’re shaping up with classical stretching routines by former professional dancer Miranda Esmonde-White and her daughter Sahra. Used by medal-winning athletes, their Essentrics workout includes ballet and tai chi exercises that focus on strengthening the muscles for a lean, toned look.

At this rate, we’ve got a leg up on the January sales (and bikini season).

    heeling power

Skyscraper heels elongate the leg, but if your unsteady gate makes you seem more rhino then runway, then what’s the point?

Yearning to break out a pair of Sergio Rossi python pumps at a holiday party, we’re working our high heel fitness with exercise routines from The Legwork.  Using yoga, pilates and dance moves, this 30-minute instructional DVD teaches the basics of walking in 3+ inches:  Keep your chest up, engage the lower abs, relax your leg from hips to knees.  You’ll be a graceful gazelle in no time, with great gams to match.

Too bad this model didn’t try it.

    FIT TO BE TRIED

Going to the gym is supposed to be a priority, but one more stint on that elliptical machine might cause us to die of dullness.

We’re resorting to a little child’s play with a few sessions at X-Fit.

More like an adult playground than a gym, this tiny space is filled with medicine balls, ladders, hurdles and balance boards.

Whether it’s running obstacle courses or marching up and down stairs with sandbags, these quick-change workouts kept us so busy there was no time for boredom.

Personal trainers Eric Saulnier and Derek Della Rocca are so head-over-heels for their approach, they offer the first session for free.
