    RENAISSANCE MAN

Don't pay any attention to what they write about you. Just measure it in inches. --Andy Warhol

Warhol Live at the MMFA reveals how music and dance inspired the eccentric pop artist’s paintings, photos, album covers and films.

Our faves include a giant silk-screen of Martha Graham, a silver trunk from The Factory, and an entire room devoted to Andy’s obsession with Mick Jagger. And after curling up on the pink sofa to watch Edie Sedgwick in Poor Little Rich Girl, we raced home to perfect our cat-eye liner technique.

    LONG LIVE YSL

If you’re as saddened as we are about the passing of fashion great Yves Saint Laurent, find comfort at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

A retrospective of the designer’s work features 145 accessorized creations that span an impressive 40-year career. We were struck by the timelessness of Saint Laurent’s designs, most of which wouldn’t be out of place on the current pages of Vogue: Mondrian cocktail dresses c. 1965, a satin Norman blouse c. 1962 and the original grain de poudre dress worn by Catherine Deneuve in Belle de jour (1967).

Adieu M. Saint Laurent, you will be missed.

Yves Saint Laurent until September 30, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, 1379 Sherbrooke St. W., 514-285-2000, www.mmfa.qc.ca

    MODESTLY YOURS

It’s hard to believe there was once a time when bare ankles were suggestive, only exotic dancers wore thongs and cleavage was something never, ever revealed in good company.

An exhibit of photos and fashion at the McCord Museum looks at our perceptions of modesty and eroticism in women's clothing over the past 150 years. Reveal or Conceal? is made up of 200 pieces (think corsets, bullet bras, and hoop skirts) selected from the museum’s vast Costume and Textiles collection.

Reveal or Conceal? showing until January 18, 2009 at the McCord Museum of Canadian History, 690 Sherbrooke Street W., Montreal, 514-398-7100, www.mccord-museum.qc.ca

    CULTURALLY CUBAN

You’re longing for warmer climes but the closest you’re getting to sun is that stock shot of a blue lagoon on your screen saver.

While your toes may not be touching sandy beaches anytime soon, a new exhibit at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts will bring a bit of the Caribbean right to you. ¡Cuba! features paintings, sculptures, photos and music that reflect the country’s colourful political history.

Now if only you could mambo at the museum.

¡Cuba! Art and History from 1868 to Today is showing Jan. 31-June 8th, 2008, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, 1380 Sherbrooke St. W., Montreal, 514-285-2000, www.mbam.qc.ca

    THE HAT HAS IT

Now that there’s a nip in the air, we’re searching for something pretty to keep our head warm.

Find inspiration at the Musée du costume et du textile on the South Shore. Its latest exhibit showcases the talent of one of Québec’s most talented milliners, Lucie Grégoire.

“Happy Head” is a selection of some of her finest hats made from flax, wicker, leather and feather. And she never sketches her designs in advance, so each chapeau is an original bit of whimsy.

Order your own Lucie Grégoire cloche at her East End atélier. Or sign up for one of her hat making workshops.

Now if we could just find a cure for hat head…

Lucie Grégoire Modiste, 514-279-8856 by appointment only, www.luciegregoiremodiste.ca

Happy Head (until December 9), Musée du costume et du textile du Québec, 349 Riverside St., St. Lambert, 450-923-6601, www.mctq.org

    new york on a dime

Think a trip to New York is going to cost you an arm and a handbag? We've got the inside scoop.

    see

When it's not playing host to Fashion Week, Bryant Park provides the perfect backdrop for another kind of black-and-white classic. Grab a spot on the grass, order sandwiches from 'wichcraft (delivered straight to your blanket), bring a bottle of wine (but don't advertise it) and cuddle up with your sweetie under the New York City lights. Our pick? Casablanca on August 13. Free movies run Mondays all summer long, at sunset. Between 40th and 42nd Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues, 212-768-4242. www.bryantpark.org

    eat

Pssst!!!! Can you keep a secret? PDT (short for Please Don't Tell) located at the back of Crifdogs, is a speakeasy style lounge only accessible via a secret entrance in a vintage phone booth. Pick up the receiver and smile for the camera that's checking you out from the other side. Once you're buzzed in, grab a chair (there's a strict no standing policy) and chow down on deep fried hot dogs and tater tots that, oddly enough, go quite well with muddled fruit cocktails. Drinks are $11 but the dogs are street cheap, starting at $2.25. 113 St. Marks Place, 212-614-0386, www.pdtnyc.com

Free on Friday? If you are, then the MoMA is too. Every Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., the Museum of Modern Art waves its standard $20 admission fee thanks to Target Free Friday Nights. Don't be daunted by the line, it'll all be worth it once you get inside and see the Richard Serra retrospective, currently the hottest exhibition in the country. 11 West 53 Street, 212-708-9400. www.moma.org
