Tough as Nails
Green has never been our nail colour of choice, but when a reader wrote in asking for chemical-free varnish suggestions we decided to polish up on the market’s best natural brands:
Long-lasting and quick drying, Ontario’s Suncoat water-based nail polishes are coloured with natural pigments and come in a range of pearlised, matte and iridescent finishes. At various locations across the GTA, www.suncoatproducts.com.
Zoya offers a vast array of nail colours free of toluene, formaldehyde and dibutylphalate (DBP). The polish lasts forever, so make sure you use a base coat with darker shades to avoid staining. At eBay ($4.50 plus minimal shipping).
Durable, glossy and free of nasty chemicals, New York’s Priti line ($10 a bottle) even has its own non-toxic Soy Polish Remover ($11.25). Available online here.
With a range of polishes ($12) that are ‘3free’ (toluene, formaldehyde and DBP), Butter London takes care of you and the environment. The super nourishing, herbal-based products like the strengthening Horse Power ($20) a nail fertilizer are also fantastic. At Holt Renfrew, 50 Bloor St., W, Toronto, 416-922-2333, www.holtrenfrew.com.
