The SW20 Cocktail
If you try and find strawberries in a fruit market in London at the end of June, the sellers will tell you that there’s none because they are all at Wimbledon. The tennis competition is best known for its consumption of champagne and strawberries, rather than sport.
In celebration of Wimbledon, starting next week, we’ve asked Joe Smith, the bartender at Nita Lake Lodge, craft a British cocktail that resembles their traditional Pimms drink, featuring strawberries (which we have an abundance of this time of year, unlike London.) And of course, we tried to keep it local, by sourcing our gin from Pemberton Distilleries and getting strawberries from the Fraser Valley (which are very much in season right now!)
The SW20 cocktail (named after the postal code of Wimbledon) is best served in a pitcher, outside, with friends. And there’s no risk of developing tennis elbow. —Alexandra Suhner Isenberg
