A New York Minute with Jin Soon Choi

We caught up with famed manicurist Jin Soon Choi backstage at the fall 2011 Doo.Ri show during New York Fashion Week.

Amidst the mayhem of prepping for a runway show, the owner of three New York spas (clients include Sarah Jessica Parker and Scarlett Johansson), a fashion show and magazine regular, and “Nail Guru” as coined by the New York Times Magazine, had only a few minutes to spare but she gave us the quick lowdown on how to keep our nails looking their best.

“The first think I always say and the most important thing is to moisturize. People think that nails are dead so you don’t have to moisturize but if you think about dry wood and dry wood furniture, and then the wood that is well oiled, it looks fresh and shiny. Your nails are the same.
When moisturizing the hands, remember the actual nail and cuticle too and you also want to use a cuticle oil on and around the nail bed daily.”

Editor’s Note: Choi practices what she preaches; her nails, au naturel we might add, were shiny and fresh the day we interviewed her.
