Pastry, je t’aime
Dear French culinary angels, thanks for blessing us with La Boulangerie.
The bustling bakery café just opened in Mission and is headed by chef Navot Raz, the Cordon Bleu trained chef that already had us lining up at the Kingsland Farmer’s Market every weekend for croque monsieur. La Boulangerie has made-to-order crepes, baguette and croissant sandwiches, pots of piping hot soups and cases filled with flaky pastries and tarts. Wash it all down with an Illy coffee and take a loaf of fresh bread home. Sit on the patio for people watching and peek through the windows at the back to see the bakers in action.
C’est magnifique. —Jaelyn Molyneux

Fly Girl
We may sometimes wear our heart on our sleeve, but this year we also wear our wishes around our neck.
Cinder & Sage plane necklaces are an ode to our wanderlust and a reminder of goals to leave on a jet plane to far flung locales this year. The plane pendants are covered in vintage stamps for charming inspiration.
Now, where to first? —Jaelyn Molyneux

Lay back relax and get lashed.
Noir Lash Lounge opens its first location in Calgary and it is all dark charcoal and flirty fuschia with lounge chairs spread out in the open space. Noir has more than 100 lash-styles at its disposal and can make your fringe over-the-top dramatic for the holidays or just a little better than your natural self for everyday. Extensions, mascara and lash curlers are a thing of the past.

Chi-Chi Chic
No matter the season, or the occasion, you can always make a case for the little black dress.
The staple of staples, the LBD is a specialty at Chichi Couture. Recently relocated to the Mission neighbourhood, the new space is filled with pieces that range from simple daywear (jersey dresses and tops) to glammed-up evening attire (sparkly gowns and feather boas). The store’s mandate is a one-stop shop for women who are travelling or on the go. Some of our favourite pieces include the versatile dresses and tunics by D’Avenue, an obscure label from Seoul, and the big baubles from the in-store accessories collection, Holly Allen Jewellery.
And for that hit of colour, all you need with your LBD is a neon clutch by Kate Spade and off you go to strut your stuff on the in-store runway. —MG

Puff It Up
After a post-holiday break from all things sweet, your first time back into sugar land should be slow, small, and most of all, worth every bite.
The two-bite goodness of a mini creampuff from the new Cruffs is the perfect sweet debut. The fresh, crunchy shells are filled with your choice of flavoured custard including hazelnut, coconut, lemon or our favourite, the classic Chantilly cream. And if you want the most bang of flavour for your buck and your sweet tooth, mix two filling flavours in one shell. Rebel with a sugar cause.
Mini size, $1.25 each or $13 for a dozen.

Knit Picks
Falling back comes with a chilly price: winter is almost here. But if there’s one thing we love about getting the chills, it’s warming up in cozy knits.
This year, we’ll be doing it in the new knitwear line Augden. The New York-based company is hush-hush about who’s behind the designs (a little bird told us it’s a former knitwear designer for a major women’s label), but they do divulge the line is masterminded in the Big Apple and hand-knit by artisans in the Andes. Made from sustainable and soft natural yarns native to the mountain range, the oversized cardigan ($610, pictured) is the epitome of cozy-cool while the shrunken crewneck will go perfectly with a high-waisted, mid-calf skirt. Slice of Life
Even without the moon hitting our eye, Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria’s pies were enough to make us proclaim, that’s amore.
Housed in a window-clad round space (how fitting) in the heart of Mission, the Edmonton-based company just opened its first Calgary location. With a laidback vibe (you order at the counter) and little fuss, the eatery focuses on the authentic Neapolitan pizzas (from $11) and New World pizzas (same hand-stretched base with more modern toppings like ham and pineapple (from $13.50). Pop in for a lunch pizzetta (half the size of a regular pizza, from $7) but be prepared for a wait as the staff is still finding its groove.
But that Nutella pizza with banana ($10) is well worth it.

Mission Macarons
The feathery light, small round bites of perfection are nearly impossible to master but the husband-and-wife team behind the new Yann Haute Patisserie has succeeded in creating melt-in-your-mouth macarons.
Former pastry chef at the Fairmont Palliser, Yann Blanchard grew up in a pastry shop in France and studied the craft in Paris before moving to Calgary and meeting Jéraldine over warm, fresh croissants in the bakery where they both worked (the former is true, the croissants, we just imagined). Now, in the bright yellow house in Mission, the duo creates eclairs, pâtes de fruits, croissants, pains au chocolat and rustic baguettes made with homemade sourdough. But it’s the Parisian macarons ($1.80/each), in flavours such as passion fruit and milk chocolate, caramel and ganache fleur de sel and pistachio and morello cherry that have us swooning over the thought of the first bite, and the second.

Footloose
Most nights the Loubs and Choos are wardrobe staples, but sky high heels can be a hindrance when you’re trying to bust a move.
If you’re ready to hit the dance floor, or just want to rock a skater girl look for a change, opt for a pair of cute high-tops from the newly opened Livestock. The walls of the well-known sneaker emporium are lined with mostly men’s shoes but the well-edited models for the ladies include Nike high-tops with the classic double Velcro ($130), subtly striped tennis shoes by Adidas ($70, pictured) and neon Air Max sneaks. Now kick off those Sunday shoes.
