Metal Mash-up
Once a fashion faux-pas, mixing silver and gold is now an accessory all right. But what’s even cooler than a silver and gold mix-up? Answer: a metal mix-a-thon.
CoutuKitsch is a Calgary/Winnipeg mother-daughter duo behind a vintage-inspired accessories collection that includes many mixed-metal pieces. A few of my favourites are the duster earrings, made up of delicate copper, antique bronze, gold, silver, and gunmetal chains ($25) and the hand armor vintage brass cuff/ring that’s attached by the same chains from finger to wrist ($40, pictured).
The line also includes handmade scarves, cufflinks and accessories with a more delicate look for those who aren’t ready to become metal heads just yet.

Power Hour
Take velvet, leather and lace, throw in some sharp tailoring, wide-leg pants and loose trousers and you’ve got the fall trend recipe down.
Calgary designer Caitlin Power hits all the marks, and then some, with her fall collection. The schoolgirl uniform is all grown up as a sheer, burgundy top is paired with an asymmetrical pencil skirt and Power offers her take on the power suit. Some of her pieces are still a tad theatrical but with each collection, the young designer is getting more familiar with the less-is-more aesthetic and focusing on what she does best: rich textures rather than grand silhouettes. Power to her.

Life's a Beach Bag
We’ve long had a love affair with the leather bags and bow clutches by Hoakon loves Helga, but now we’re having a summer fling with the line’s newest beach totes and bike bags.
Made from fabric and deconstructed vintage leather jackets, the bags are all handmade in Calgary. The upcycled, fully lined, textured black leather bike bag with a zipper closure and vintage belt straps for attaching to your handlebars (US$65) is the perfect cruiser bike accessory while the Ikat print beach tote (US$65, pictured) even has a pocket for your summer read. Summer loving happens so fast.

Back to the Future
Inspired by the then futuristic 1982 sci-fi flick Tron, Design + Conquer’s new collection is also ahead of its time (think Lady Gaga meets Battlestar Galactica).
Made from malleable plastic polymer, the bold necklaces, cuffs and wearable art pieces form against the body but retain an airy lightness perfect for everyday wear (smaller items from $59.95, and larger pieces up to $1,275). Spaceship not included.
Check out the new collection May 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Marquee Room; select pieces available at AG Silver Boutique, Upper Level Fashion Central, 212, 805 First St. SW, Calgary, www.fashioncentral.ca

First Street Fashion
Window shopping is dangerous at the best of times, but it’s game over if you pass by the new location of Songkla. The boutique/studio space run by a lovely brother-sister duo has relocated to an airy new space on First Street SW.
Inspired by classic menswear, the women’s spring collection has a masculine feel offset by added details and cuts to flatter a feminine silhouette. Known for their line of uber cool jackets, Mananoshe, the new collection includes water resistant spring parkas, military flight jackets and leather-sleeved varsity jackets. For warmer days there are chambray blazers with matching shorts.Whoever invented window shopping was just tempting fate anyway.

Home Bodies
Bringing in international designer lines is the norm for Smyth & Kang, but this season look for the boutique to shift fashion gears.
Carrying more local and Canadian collections, the shop now boasts plenty of homegrown talent. Tailored pieces from menswear line KaaDiki, flirty frocks and skirts (seen here) by Project Runway Canada’s Adejoké Taiwo’s line àlalá and architect-turned-designer Lara Presber’s structured shift dresses are just a few. You already love the 100 Mile Diet, so why not the 100-Mile Wardrobe?
