Even the most steady hand needs a little help when applying a new tube of cherry red lipstick.
So we're guarding against mouthy mishaps with the smooth and creamy Make Up For Ever Lip Line Perfector. Colourless and suitable for all shades, it creates an invisible (but crucial) barrier to prevent feathering and smudging - and absolute necessity when working with bright lipstick.
And just in time for Valentine smooches. We're sold. —Kait Kucy

When Oscar Wilde wrote “her sweet red lips on these lips of mine” in 1881, he had no idea he was summing up a 2011 beauty product.
Fresh’s lip treatment has been a favourite for years, moisturizing and plumping our puckers with a formula that combines oils and waxes with real sugar. This fall Fresh introduced its latest spicy shade, Sugar Passion. The sheer crimson tint does what few reds have done before and flatters all skin tones.
We’ll kiss to that. —Jaelyn Molyneux

Somewhere between fall’s fuchsia fetish and spring’s orange love, there’s a lip shade that’s the best of both bright worlds. The hue’s name, coral, may lack the thrill that fire-engine red evokes, but it makes up for it in perfectly-coloured punch.
Maybelline has a Coral Crush (the Peachy Scene is a close second), Rimmel London’s Coral Shimmer gives your pout a hint of colour and a soft shine, and Revlon’s Hot Coral is a must for a night out on the town.
The best thing about coral is that its spectrum of shades varies from a true hue (more on the orangey side) to a light pink, or a deeper coral that is a worthy rival of the ubiquitous red lip.

A return to minimalism but with an “everything goes” attitude, there are still plenty of fall trends to sift through. Herewith our five picks to get you started:
A large silk twill scarf by Juma (from $130) is light enough for fall and uber cool with its the subtle skull print. At Shisomiso Boutique and Gallery, 105, 100 Seventh Ave. SW, Calgary, 403-266-4211, www.shisomiso.com
The It Bag is back. Ease into the investment trend with The Tote by Peter Kent Buenos Aires. It’s our take on the bucket bag with a more structured silhouette.
