Adventures in Mexico City
May 18th, 2011

I did so much in four days, I could probably write a memoir of sorts. But in true Vitamin Daily style, I’m going to do a list. Here are the Top 10 Things I’ve Never Done Before I Visted Mexico City.
1. Rocked a Segway through downtown Mexico City.
Okay, maybe “rocked” is the wrong word, since I spent the first 10 minutes almost crying. But it turned out to be a fast and efficient way to experience the grandiose Reforma Avenue (sorry, Champs-Élysées, you might have some competition here).

2. Received spiritual cleansing by a shaman woman named Chaka.
I suppose it was my Eat, Pray, Love moment, although Chaka wasn’t missing any of her teeth. But she was wearing a wicked black lip liner. How could I not trust her?

3. Made friends with a slew of art-appreciating Mexican hairless dogs. And peacocks.
Like most eccentric millionaires, Dolores Olmedo Patiño had a penchant for collecting rare and beautiful things. Among her numerous masterpieces by Frida Khalo, Diego Riviera and amazing folk artists, walk the adorable hairless dogs and peacocks.

4. Bought a poncho, like to wear.
No, not like Ugly Betty’s. These ones are a work of art and, I promise you, very fashionable. I think I’ll pair them with a long black dress and my Margiela stilettos. Great investment!

5. Got to watch ballet in a castle -- yes, a real live castle.
Ballet Folklórico de México outside of the Chapultepec Castle to be exact. Except it started to rain. But what I saw was exhilarating!

6. I ate bugs. Two kinds, in fact.
I just had to or the foodie army would’ve come after me! Because this particular restaurant, Pujol, made it onto San Pellegrino’s Top 50 restaurants in the world list. So yes – bugs and ground up ants. And guess what? They were super tasty.
7. Was serenaded by a Mariachi band.
While floating in a trajinera (gondola) in the gardens of Xochimilco. I really didn’t think these things happened outside of Venice. And may I mention that Mariachis have the coolest pants? Kind of Balmain-esque.
8. Shot tequila before noon.
But that was for the sake of education, I swear. See, I learned how it’s made. Something about this Agave cactus….

9. I learned to walk on tilted ground (and not due to tequila).
Sounds weird, right? But the fact is that Mexico City is sinking. It was actually built in the middle of the lake by the ancient Aztecs (move over Koen Olthuis, they were way ahead of you). It’s super fascinating catching a sinking building or two – almost makes you dizzy.

10. Climbed a pyramid.
For real. How many of you can say that? And not just any old pyramid but the legendary Mayan Teotihuacán Pyramid of the Sun, famous for its 365 (okay, a few were missing) stairs. Truly one of the coolest experiences of my life.

¡Adios!
