5 Questions with Jason Wu
November 15th, 2011
This editor was very excited to meet the talented Jason Wu at The
Bay's The Room (so excited that she actually forgot to take a photo of
him. Oops!) His spring summer 2012 runway samples were on show in the
store, and they looked fantastic.
Vitamin Daily: How would you describe your woman? We think she is quite ladylike.
Jason Wu: She is feminine, confident, and it is really
about that attention to detail. She loves the idea of craftsmanship and
clothing with a timeless quality. Ladylike with an edge.
VD: Do you think this "new ladylike" is back in fashion?
JW: Very much so. Women want to look very feminine, there
is a glamorous energy in the air and women are having fun with dressing
up. They aren't afraid of wearing evening during the day. The
traditional notion of day, afternoon, tea, and evening is gone. It is
more about "my" style, and all about clothes that can work for all day
long. I work with so many great girls, and they are busy girls. They
don't have time to go home and change, they go from work, change their
accessories, and go out. I feel like that is what the new ladylike is
about, it is faster.
VD: How do you do evening for the day?
JW: For spring I showed some peplum coats but made in a
cotton nylon. I thought that was very interesting, because that type of
volume is generally seen in evening, and I like putting that in day. At
one point, that may have seemed out of place, but now, not so much.
VD:
Your clothing is very beautifully made, but also quite expensive. For
the woman who mixes high and low, what are the key pieces in a wardrobe
that should be bought high?
JW: Definitely shoes, they can go along way. Great shoes
and handbag, most accessories. I think a great dress. The go-to dress
that you always feel great in, I think that is really important. For
someone who doesn't go out all the time, and doesn't have an occasion to
wear something dressy very often, she must have that go-to dress. That
is a great investment piece, I feel that everyone needs that. It is like
a black suit.
VD: How has Vancouver inspired you as a designer? (Jason lived here from 9 to 13 years old)
JW: Well, I learned sewing here, and I learned English
here. So I guess it helped shape who I am, in so many ways. It is really
nice to be back. I would like to go and explore a bit today, to see what
has changed, now that the Olympics has happened.
Let's all start saving up for one of his beautiful dresses! Shop Jason Wu at The Room,The Bay Downtown, 674 Granville Street, Vancouver.
